The Sirius Caravan - II
Tunis: Cité des Sciences & the Zitouna Mosque

Reaching Tunis the Capital on next day in the morning to carry out the remaining of the program.

On our way to our residency. A nice “Auberge de Jeunesse” (Youth Hostel) right in the populous downtown Tunis. See a picture of it here.

The Tunis Science Museum (Cité des Sciences), an imposing scientific and cultural landmark of the city.

The planetarium of the Cité des Sciences: A perfect sphere of 20m in diameter. The internal dome itself has a 14 m diameter and seats some 120 people.

The Foucault pendulum at the main entrance next to the reception desk. Its length is a mere 17m instead of the original one of 67m at the Panthéon in Paris, so it needs to be assisted by electrical impulses so as to compensate for its lack of inertia its quick dampening. It takes it some 40h to swing a full turn.

A original analemnatic sundial at the entrance. The gnomon is here the person itself standing in the middle. At right is the clepsydra or water clock used in the antiquity.

Visiting the Planetarium of the "Cité des Sciences". It is equipped with a SN 88 II of RSA- Cosmos (At right). More here

The Earth Sciences section of the Science Museum. In the middle is a simulation of the concentration of the various gas in theEarth atmosphere in function of the height. At right is a "simulation" of the greenhouse effect.
The same evening of March 23, we organized a common program with "Jeunes Science-Tunis" who were having an intensive stage of formation for scientific animators from all over Tunisia.

That evening, two lectures were given to the benefit of the animators, one by Prof.A.Bouldjedri a long time Sirius member (At right) from Batna University, and the other one by J.M. the Sirius president.

Some 200 future animators along with the Jeunes Science supervisory team and our 30 strong group, warmly applauding to this very special evening, a tribute to this Algero-Tunisian collaboration.

Some gifts of Sirius to "Jeunes - Science".

At the historical Zitouna Mosque in the heart of Tunis.
