Sirius 's Pride

This poster which has been commissioned by the National Committee for the Celebration of IYA2009 at its first session back in June 2008, was conceived and realized by Sirius. It received input in the late stage from various members of the National Committee and was generously printed by the CRAAG. It was widely distributed across Algeria and in particular at educationnal institutions. We could see it used at various astronomy celebrations all over Algeria like at Béjaia, Algiers, and even at far away places like Tunis, Shanghai, Khartoum...
The artist working, closely with the Sirius president, was no other than Chamseddine MOUATSI, the ever active Sirius member who has throughout the years conceived the various Sirius posters and printed material.

Evolution of the National Poster
...in Few Steps

Reading the Poster
It embodies the IYA-2009 symbolism as well as national features and emblems, most notably the Algerian flag and in the middle the Moudjahid's Monument (Maqam Echahid) rising like a rocket at El Madania on a surelevated hill at Algiers, thus in central Algeria. If you look closely at it, you will see represented from right to left all the various cities and regions of Algeria running West to East. In addition, the foreground represents the Sahara, Algeria's strategic depth for which the Algerian War of Liberation lingered longer because of the French insistence of keeping it to itself while willing to grant the independance to the North. Other element worth mentionning is the special importance given to the Ghardaia's main minaret a distintive element of the M'zab region which suffered few months earlier from devastating inundations with heavy loss of lives. In addition, various historical Mosques, ancient Roman cities and the Cathedral of Annaba were included.
The sky merges smoothly with the background and represent various astronomical objects like planetary nebula galaxies, bright stars, star clusters, comets... The central extended diffuse reddish object is meant to be the Milky Way.

Getting it Ready
It had to be ready for the opening of the Intl Year of Astronomy grand opening at Paris in the 14th opf January so we had in early January to rush it to the printer.
